Will your passport photo pass?
Check any photo against the US passport, visa and green card rules in seconds: head size, eye height, background, light, glasses and file size, explained in plain words.
Private by design: the check runs in your browser. Your photo is not uploaded, not saved and not used for anything else.
Your photo never leaves your device: it's checked in your browser and not uploaded or saved.
The rules it checks, in plain words
- Size

- Eyes
- 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom of the photo, open, looking at the camera.
- Background
- Plain white or off-white, no shadows or objects.
- Face
- Neutral expression or a natural closed-mouth smile (passports only). No glasses, no hat.
- Recent and unedited

Same rules for US passports (including online renewal), the DS-160 visa form and USCIS (green card, citizenship, work permit). Official source: travel.state.gov.

Questions
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The checker runs in your browser: the photo is read on your device, measured and never sent to us or anyone else. Nothing is saved. Close the page and it's gone. (The paid passport tool is different: there the photo is uploaded so we can make your files.)
What does it check?
One face looking straight at the camera, eyes open, mouth closed, no glasses, nothing covering the forehead, head size (1 to 1⅜ inches) and eye height (1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom), a plain light background without shadows, even light, sharpness, color, the photo's date when the file has one, and signs of editing apps. For square digital files it also checks pixels (600–1200), JPEG format and the 240 kB limit.
Does a pass mean my photo will be accepted?
No one can promise that: a government officer decides. The checker catches the most common reasons for rejection, and it marks what a camera can't judge reliably (like thin rimless glasses or a half blink) as “Check yourself”.
Can I check a photo from a drugstore or another app?
Yes. Use the digital file, or scan or photograph the printed 2×2 photo straight on and crop it to the photo's edges. Square photos are measured exactly as they are.
My photo failed. What now?
Most problems are fixed by retaking it: a plain white wall, light from a window in front of you, glasses off, and someone else holding the phone about 4 feet away. Our guide explains each rule. If you'd like it cropped to size with a print sheet, our passport tool does that for $8.99, without editing your face or background.
Who made this?
Proud Look, a small US company that also sells AI headshots. The passport tools are separate: they never use AI to change a photo, because the State Department asks for the original, unedited photo. We're not affiliated with the State Department or USCIS.
