Are AI headshots OK for LinkedIn?

Short answer

Yes, if it looks like you. LinkedIn's profile photo guidelines say your photo must reflect your likeness, and allow an illustration or other artistic rendering of yourself. An AI headshot made from your own photos is fine; one that no longer looks like you is not.

What LinkedIn removes

LinkedIn may remove a profile photo that breaks its User Agreement or Professional Community Policies, including photos that are only:

  • a company logo, emojis, words or a flag
  • a landscape or an animal
  • a childhood or baby photo
  • someone else's likeness: stock imagery, celebrities or fictional characters

That last point is the one that matters for AI: a generated face that isn't really you, or a stock-style portrait, is exactly what the rule is about.

How to get an AI headshot that still looks like you

Our advice, from making headshots every day:

  1. Upload 6 or more recent photos of just you, from different days and in different light. One selfie gives the AI too little to go on.
  2. Skip filters, sunglasses, heavy makeup you don't usually wear, and photos more than a year old.
  3. Pick the headshot that looks like you today, not the most flattering one. The person who meets you on a video call should recognise you.
  4. Match the outfit to your field: a suit for finance and law, a blazer or open collar for most offices, scrubs or a white coat for healthcare.
  5. Keep it current: refresh it when your hair, glasses or look change.

Size and framing

LinkedIn crops your photo to a circle, so use a square image with your face in the middle and some space above your head. Size guides commonly recommend at least 400 × 400 pixels; a larger image stays sharp on big screens.

How Proud Look keeps your likeness

We study all 4–10 of your photos so each headshot keeps your face, skin and age, and include a square crop for LinkedIn. If none of them looks like you, you get a full refund within 7 days.

Questions

Does LinkedIn allow AI-generated profile photos?

LinkedIn's profile photo guidelines say your photo must reflect your likeness, and that you can use an illustration, caricature or other artistic rendering of yourself. An AI headshot made from your own photos that looks like you fits that; one that looks like someone else doesn't.

Can LinkedIn remove my profile photo?

Yes, if it doesn't comply with its User Agreement and Professional Community Policies, for example a photo that is only a logo, landscape, animal or flag, a childhood photo, or someone else's likeness such as stock imagery or a celebrity. You can then upload a different photo.

Do I have to say my LinkedIn photo was made with AI?

LinkedIn's photo guidelines don't mention disclosure. What they require is that the photo reflects your likeness. If someone asks, just be honest.

What size should my LinkedIn photo be?

LinkedIn shows profile photos in a circle, so use a square image with your face centred. Size guides commonly recommend at least 400 × 400 pixels. Proud Look headshots are 4K and include a square crop.
