Can ChatGPT make a professional headshot?

Written by Proud Look, which sells AI headshots. We've kept it fair: ChatGPT is often enough.

Short answer

  • Yes, sometimes. From one sharp, recent photo of you, ChatGPT can change the background and clothes and give you a usable headshot.
  • The catch is likeness: it redraws the picture from a single photo, and your face can drift.
  • For a photo people will compare with you in person, check the likeness carefully, or use a service that learns from several of your photos.

When ChatGPT is enough

  • A casual profile picture (Slack, WhatsApp, a forum).
  • A stopgap photo while you get a better one.
  • You already have a good recent photo, just with the wrong background or clothes.
  • You don't mind trying a few times until one works.

Where it goes wrong: likeness

A headshot has one job: to look like you on the day someone meets you. That's where a general image tool and a headshot service differ most.

  • Your face can drift.

It works from one photo, so the eyes, nose or smile can come out slightly different. Slightly is enough for someone who knows you to notice it isn't you.

  • It tends to “improve”.

Smoother skin, fewer lines, whiter teeth. On a face of 45 or more, that reads as a different, younger person.

  • One image at a time.

Getting several photos in different outfits and backgrounds, all with the same face, takes many tries.

  • Everything rests on one photo.

If your photo has poor light or an odd angle, every result inherits it.

12 prompts to copy

Start from a recent photo in daylight, facing the camera, with only you in it. Which photos work best

The five parts of a good prompt

  1. Lock your face“Keep my face, features, skin, hair and age exactly as they are.” Always first.
  2. FramingHead and shoulders, centered, with space above the head; name the ratio (square or 4:5).
  3. A specific outfit“Navy blazer over a white shirt”, not “professional attire”.
  4. BackgroundPlain light grey, white or a softly blurred office; no text or logos.
  5. Light and skinSoft light from the front; real skin texture, no smoothing.

Warm and approachable
Turn this photo into a professional headshot. Keep my face, features, skin texture, hair and age exactly as they are. Head and shoulders, centered, with space above my head, square format. Soft, even light from the front. Realistic skin texture, no smoothing.
Speaker or author bio
Turn this photo into a professional portrait for a bio. Keep my face, features, skin texture, hair and age exactly as they are. Dress me in a black blazer over a plain top, on a plain dark backdrop. Soft light from one side that shapes the face, no harsh shadows. Head and shoulders, centered, with space above my head, square format. Soft, even light from the front. Realistic skin texture, no smoothing.
Outdoors
Turn this photo into a professional headshot. Keep my face, features, skin texture, hair and age exactly as they are. Head and shoulders, centered, with space above my head, square format. Soft, even light from the front. Realistic skin texture, no smoothing.
Just fix my selfie
Improve this photo so it works as a professional headshot. Keep my face, features, skin texture, hair and age exactly as they are. Change only the light and the background, to a plain neutral one. Don't change my clothes or my expression. Head and shoulders, centered, with space above my head, square format. Soft, even light from the front. Realistic skin texture, no smoothing.
If your face changed
My face changed. Use the face from the original photo with no changes at all, and replace only the background and the clothes.
For LinkedIn
Crop it square, head and shoulders, centered, with space above the head, for a LinkedIn profile picture. Change nothing else.

Check it's still you

  • Ask for the same picture twice. If the two faces don't match each other, at least one of them isn't you.
  • Put it next to your original photo and compare the eyes, nose, jaw, hairline and smile lines.
  • Show it to someone who sees you often, without explaining, and ask: “Who's this?”
  • Look at it small, the way LinkedIn shows it: do you recognize yourself instantly?
  • If you hesitate, don't use it. A well-lit phone photo beats one that doesn't look like you.

Questions

Can ChatGPT make a LinkedIn headshot?

Yes, if you start from a sharp, recent photo and the result still looks like you. Recruiters and clients will meet you on video calls, so a photo that looks like someone else does more harm than a plain phone photo.

Why does ChatGPT change my face?

Image generators draw a new picture rather than retouching yours pixel by pixel, so small things can shift: the shape of the eyes, the nose, the smile lines, the skin. From a single photo there's little to hold your features in place. Asking it to keep your face helps, but check every result.

Can I use ChatGPT for a passport photo?

No. Passport and visa photos must be real, unedited photos of you. An AI-made or AI-edited picture can get your application rejected.

Is it safe to upload my photo to ChatGPT?

Your photo follows your ChatGPT data settings, so check them first, including whether your chats can be used to improve its models. Upload only a photo you'd be happy to share, and never a photo of an ID document.

Do Gemini and other AI image tools work the same way?

The same checks apply to any general image tool: start from one good photo, ask it to keep your face before anything else, and compare the result with a recent photo of you. The prompts on this page work as a starting point in any of them.

When is Proud Look worth it over ChatGPT?

When the photo has to pass as you in person: LinkedIn, a company website, a speaker bio, a realtor sign. Proud Look works from 4 to 10 of your photos, gives you a set of 54, 96, 150 headshots by plan to choose from, and refunds you in full within 7 days, even after downloading, if none look like you.
