What makes a profile photo work

Square
LinkedIn shows a circle cut from your photo. A square photo with your face in the middle needs little cropping.
Head and shoulders
Your head should fill about half the frame, so you're recognizable next to a comment.
Light
Soft daylight from a window in front of you. No harsh sun, no flash.
Recent
It should look like you do now, so people recognize you on a video call.

Questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The checker runs in your browser: the photo is read on your device, measured and never sent to us or anyone else. The crops you download are made on your device too. Close the page and it's gone.

What size should a LinkedIn profile photo be?

LinkedIn Help says between 400 × 400 and 7680 × 4320 pixels, up to 8 MB, as a PNG or JPG (no GIFs). LinkedIn shows the photo in a circle, so a square photo with your face in the middle works best. A larger photo stays sharp on big screens.

What does it check?

The file type and size, the pixels in your crop, whether there's one face, how much of the circle your head fills, centering, light, sharpness, open eyes, a face turned far to the side, head tilt, glare on glasses and black-and-white photos. It doesn't judge your expression, outfit or background: those are up to you.

What can't a LinkedIn profile photo be?

LinkedIn's guidelines say your photo must reflect your likeness (an illustration or artistic rendering of yourself is allowed). LinkedIn may remove photos that are only a company logo, emoji, landscape, animal, words, a flag, a childhood or baby photo, or someone else's likeness.

How do I change my LinkedIn profile photo?

Save the square JPG from this page. On LinkedIn, open your profile, click or tap your photo and choose to add a new one. LinkedIn lets you zoom and straighten it before you save.

Can I use it for Zoom, Slack, Teams or Gmail?

Yes. They all show your photo in a circle too. Download the round PNG for places that show it on any background, or the square JPG for sites that crop it themselves.

Why does it show the photo so small?

Because that's how people see it next to your posts and comments, not just on your profile. A photo that looks fine large can turn into a blur at that size if your face is small in the frame.
