Family Christmas photo ideas, even without a photo shoot

Most of these work with any phone and a timer. Two of them work even when the family can't be in the same room. The pictures are AI examples of fictional people.

8 ideas

  1. 1. Matching sweaters by the tree

The classic. Pick two colors (red and cream, green and white) rather than identical sweaters: it looks together without looking like a uniform. Tree lights behind you, no flash.

  2. 2. With the dog (or cat)

The pet in the middle, at knee height. A treat in the photographer's hand gets them looking at the camera.

  3. 3. Just the two of you

Once the kids are grown, a couple photo is a family card too. Close together, warm light.

  4. 4. A watercolour card

A portrait painted in watercolour with snowy branches: it prints well and stands out among the other cards.

  5. 5. The whole family, even when you live far apart

When there's no way to get together, everyone sends a photo from their phone and a portrait of all of you is made from them.

  6. 6. New Year's instead of Christmas

Party clothes and golden lights: it works as a New Year card and arrives after the December rush.

  7. 7. In the kitchen, baking cookies

A candid photo in the middle of something often looks more natural than a pose. Take lots and pick one.

  8. 8. Outside, in winter coats

Coats, scarves and late-afternoon light. Works with or without snow; avoid midday sun on faces.

What to wear

  • Two or three colors for everyone, not the same item.
  • Solids over big prints; one patterned sweater is enough.
  • No logos or lettering: they distract and print badly.
  • If someone wears glasses, keep the glare off (tilting them slightly down helps).

What to write on the card

  • Keep it short: “Merry Christmas from the Garcias” and the year.
  • If someone couldn't be there, name them: the card is from the whole family.
  • Names and dates in real text: AI-made pictures get letters wrong.

Questions

What should a family wear for Christmas photos?

Coordinated, not identical: two or three colors for everyone, mostly solids, one patterned piece at most, and nothing with logos or lettering.

How can we take a family Christmas photo if we can't get together?

Everyone sends a recent photo of themselves, and an AI service makes one portrait of all of you. Check every face before you print it.

When should we send Christmas cards?

Mailed cards need time to print and travel, so order early in December. A digital card by email or message can go out any day, even Christmas Eve.

Can the dog be in the picture?

Of course. At Proud Look, adding your pet to a group portrait costs nothing extra.
